DIR-Fundamentals of better diving PDF Print E-mail
GUE's "fundamentals of better diving is a course which is designed to cultivate dive skills which are normally not emphasized in most training curriculums. Dive one begins by introducing propulsion techniques such as frog kick, modifed frog kick, and modified flutter kicks. Much like a carpenter needs a multitude of "tools" in his tool box, a diver should have a complete set of "tools" available to them. An emphasis on "team" and "awareness" are consistant throughout all dives.

In dive two, the backup kick, helicopter turn, and "basic 5" are introduced. The premise is, all skills should be practiced while stationary, and controlling bouyancy. The basic 5 is a "building block" approach to effectively donating gas to an out-of-gas diver.

Dive three brings the valve drill and "s" drill into the mix, and dive four starts to put it all together. You might consider dive five as the "final exam" where the students operate as a team and complete a team descent, simulated out-of gas emergency, surface marker deployment, and ascent with 2 simulated deco stops.

Unlike most training courses where you pay the money and get the card, most divers find the emphasis on the training value, and certification cards are de-emphasized. Upon completion of the course, there are three certification results possible: pass, fail, or provisional pass where the diver may be sent away with a skill or two to improve upon before being re-evaluated. This is an excellent precursor to technical diving, or simply a way to solidify dive skills which will make a diver more competent, confident, and safe.
